The piercing wail of the wildfire evacuation sirens sent an electric jolt of adrenaline surging through my body. As I rushed to grab the “bug out” bags by the front door, a thick blanket of smoke began smothering the morning sun, casting an eerie orange glow across my yard.

My heart pounded in my ears as I herded my two dogs into their crates and slung my go-bag over my shoulder.

In a mere 15 minutes, I was peeling out of the driveway of my remote cabin, a swirling inferno nipping at my heels in the rearview mirror. As I sped down the winding mountain road to safety, one thought crystallized in my mind with perfect clarity — all my meticulous preparations had been worth it.

I was ready for this.

Waking Up to Hard Truths

I never imagined I’d become one of “those” people — the stereotypical paranoid survivalist holed up in a bunker, hoarding bullets and ranting about the end of days. But a few years ago, something shifted deep within me, like tectonic plates heaving before a massive quake.
